Traffic
Generation in General
This
section simply provides some information on various
other traffic generating methods. This is intended to
help you make informed choices and to help you inform
your customers. We realize that you may sometimes require
traffic and services that we do not provide –
this section may help you spot scams and good deals
when you are shopping elsewhere. In addition, knowledge
of other traffic generating methods will help you form
a complete picture of the traffic industry.
Most
services will employ one of the following traffic generation
methods:
Frame
and Pixel Loading
Some
high-traffic sites (particularly adult and Warez sites)
have low standards for content. Many of these services
will allow the insertion of special codes that cause
the viewer to load a page without actually seeing it
(the idea is that the visitor will load your page in
an unseen frame, iframe or scriplet pixel whilst gawking
at pictures). This is the most common method revealed
in the “Turnkey Traffic System” documents
sold online and elsewhere. WE
DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!
Popup's
on high-traffic websites
some
high-traffic websites will allow one or more popup windows
to be generated when a user enters or leaves the site.
If done properly, this is a legitimate method for generating
traffic. Yahoo, Netscape and many other reputable sites
allow popup's and many reputable companies advertise
in popup's (like Discover Card, X10 and Orbitz). The
downside of popup traffic is that if your site appears
in a popup, you usually won’t be allowed to use
popup's yourself. That is, the owner won’t advertise
your site if it contains a popup window because two
popup's will be created – the initial popup showing
your site and the popup generated by your site. We sometimes
generate traffic by inserting a popup on a high-quality
website with extensive quality assurances but this is
not our typical traffic source.
Incentive
Clicks/Visits
There
are a few services offering very inexpensive “click-thru”
traffic. They present this as high-quality traffic…
often it is. These sites are typically operating programs
in which they pay people to surf to your site. Of course,
the people who visit are most interested in visiting
as many sites as possible and will exit your site as
quickly as possible in order to open another site. These
users sometimes load 1,000 or more sites in an hour!
Some programs have adequate quality assurances and some
don’t, so be sure to evaluate each program individually.
WE DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!
SPAM
Unsolicited
commercial email can work… it’s a fact (why
else would people send it). Some studies indicate that
as many as 2.5% of the people randomly emailed will
visit a referenced site if the email is properly written.
So, if you email a million people, you could get 25,000
visits – free. But, there are problems: Your hosting
company will probably cancel your hosting account if
you use SPAM to generate hits (it is very easy to tell,
the server logs will clearly show that a large volume
of traffic is generated by email). Many people get very
angry when they receive SPAM. Out of the thousands of
people who are emailed, it is likely that there will
be a few who will take revenge. the legality of SPAM
is questionable in certain regions. There will generally
be no promise of results – e.g. the number of
messages to be sent out is guaranteed, not the number
of people who will visit your site. Thus, SPAM can work,
but it has so many problems that it probably isn't worth
it. WE DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!
Newsletters/Opt-In Email Lists
These
methods are similar to SPAM except that the users receiving
the email have usually given permission to be emailed.
Most often, users don’t realize they have allowed
the mail… they agree to be emailed when signing
up for access to a website or when installing software.
So, it isn’t clear that these methods are better
than SPAM except that they are more likely to be legal.
Your hosting company probably won’t appreciate
the distinction between these methods and SPAM and may
cancel your account anyway if you use them. There will
generally be no promise of results – e.g. the
number of messages to be sent out is guaranteed, not
the number of people who will visit your site. However,
certain firms offer high quality “fresh”
opt-in email lists. WE DO NOT
USE THIS METHOD!
Targeted
Traffic
This
category is difficult to assess because of the wide
range of methods used to generate targeted traffic.
A targeted traffic provider will offer to send interested
visitors to your site. For example, if you sell widgets,
they will offer to find people interested in widgets
and get them to look at your site. Targeted hits are
usually generated using popup's or email lists so the
pros and cons are essentially the same as with those
methods. Properly targeted traffic can be very useful,
but most services aren't’t really targeting so
be sure they show you where the traffic comes from.
Note that “incentive clicks” programs are
sometimes presented as targeted traffic
Banner
Clicks
Some
traffic services claim to use banner advertising to
generate traffic. It is easy to see how this would work
– a banner ad on a high traffic site could generate
quite a few click-thrus. Banner clicks are not easy
to generate, however. As a general rule of thumb, be
very suspicious of traffic that is purported to be generated
by banner clicks, particularly if the traffic is sold
for less than $15 CPM. Also, some firms will legitimately
generate banner clicks, but they do so using generic
banners unrelated to your site. In such cases, the banner
clicks are no more valuable than plain untargeted traffic.
So, don’t pay more than about $3-$4 CPM for banner
clicks if they don’t use a banner you supply Also,
incentive clicks programs may be presented as “banner
clicks.”
